February 6th – February 10th

Journeys Week 18 – Hercules’s Quest

Every week your child will read an anchor text as well as a paired text. The anchor text is used to work on fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary skills and strategies. The paired text may be similar in theme and or genre. This text will reinforce vocabulary usage. Student understanding of the anchor text and vocabulary will be assessed on Fridays.

Students will also work on grammar and spelling throughout the week. Assigned spelling words will also be assessed on Fridays.

The weekly story (with audio recording), spelling, and vocabulary lists are posted to Google Classroom weekly.

Friendly Reminders

  1. If your child is absent, they will receive their work upon their return (unless we set up something differently via email). Please remember it is their responsibility to return the work to school. There has recently been an uptick in missing assignments.
  2. Students should bring charged chromebooks to school each day.
  3. Water bottles are helpful to stay hydrated. These should only contain plain water.
  4. Wear rubber-soled tennis shoes are required on gym days in order to participate.
  5. Students may bring a small snack to enjoy before recess. The snack should be one portion due to limited eating time. Juice or other sugary drinks are not allowed. Students may bring water bottles for snack time. Please refrain from sending in chocolatey treats.
  6. If it is supposed to sprinkle or light rain, we will still be going outside. Your child may want to bring an umbrella or wear a raincoat on these days. Please have your child dress appropriately for the weather (see above).

  • Writing who they are from is perfect. We have a total of 27 students in our class as of right now.
  • We do have the following allergies in the room: peanut, tree nut, dairy, egg.
  • I am hoping to bring in a treat for the class. Stay tuned for an update via email as it gets closer.

All About Me – Nonfiction Text Feature Report Due Feb. 22nd

This book report will allow students to choose a noteworthy African American, past or present, to research. February is Black History Month (or African History Month) in the US, so this gives us a great opportunity to learn about the role these fascinating individuals played in American history. The report will be a file folder presentation about this person’s life and achievements. The project will be made to represent the person you are studying.  Attached are the tools needed to be completed while reading and researching. Expectations for project components are included as well.

Please keep your eyes open for a hard copy of the directions and the project pages. They will be sent home Monday, January 23rd.

To stay on track, please see the suggested pacing for the upcoming week. The entire pacing guide is in the packet.

M-Step Prep

Vocabulary Words

Students brought home the Week #6 list and extra credit crossword puzzle on Friday, January 12th. These words are to be studied at home. If students complete and return the extra credit crossword puzzle, they will earn 1 extra credit point on the quiz. On Thursday, the students will be quizzed on these words. When your child earns a 80% or better on this quiz, he/she will earn a charm for his/her M-STEP charm necklace. They will bring home the next list on Thursday, January 19th.

Homework Packets

Students also brought home MSTEP Homework packet this week. These are intended to help students practice the variety of skills they may see on the MSTEP. If your child earns 80% or better on their M-STEP practice weekly homework, they will also earn a charm towards their M-STEP charm necklace. Homework packets will be sent home on Friday and will be due back to school by the next Thursday.

I have worked with the class to pace out the packet for the week. If they follow the schedule, it will help chunk this large task down into smaller, more manageable pieces.

Thank you for your continued support at home!
